Music recommended by Michael J. McEvoy

Invisible by Film & TV ComposerMark Adair

A good atmospheric piece, demontrating a good use of orchestral instruments and electronic/sample based sound sources - mixed well together.

Supernatural by Film & TV ComposerOlivia Dixon

Strong sequential piece - quirky, dark and mysterious. I really liked the delayed electronic beep that was used - like a big wasp coming after you!

Cape Wrath by Film & TV ComposerRodney Newton

I love the mysterious underbelly of the piece, articulated by the strings. Tremelo/Augmented 4ths. Dark and murky. Lovely!

Caged In by Film & TV ComposerAnne Nikitin

Evocative, delicate and vulnerable. Beautiful production on the voice performance. Love when the strings move unexpectedly to the major 7th. Moving piece.

Lobo Pre title by Film & TV ComposerWilliam Goodchild

A really good example of what composers need to be able to achieve these days; the mix of sampled sounds and carefully chosen 'live' performance instruments ultimately gives the impression of a fully live performance - and this is produced in a project studio... Great job!

A Promising Lead by Film & TV ComposerAnne Nikitin

I love the stereo percussion, and the rich secondary string line that flows across the repeated marcato figure adds a deeper emotional layer - and a juicy dissonance too. I can feel the tension building...and when the cross rhythms kick it, I really wish I could see the images this piece was composed to... Exciting stuff!

White Boy, Black Nanny by Film & TV ComposerRob Manning

Lovely piece...very moving. A modest and effective approach to orchestration - doing just what's needed. I like the dissonance of the major 6th interval in final few bars, implying a sense that something is about to happen.

Adventure by Film & TV ComposerRoger Pasto Cortina

Well produced, good writing. The only comment I'd make is that the music sounds a little bit stiff - but overall, a strong cue with contrast and variation.

desolation by Film & TV ComposerRudi De Groote

I think the atmosphere implied has potential, but for a cue this sparse and simplistic, the production and overall sonic quality needs to be richer and broader for the listener to really connect. I also feel that the repetitive, almost relentless triadic figure doesn't demonstrate much compositional prowess.

Ghost in the Machine by Film & TV ComposerAndy Stuteley

Good choice of sonic textures and sound design elements. Demonstrates accomplished use of samples and sound sources/plug-ins. The cue doesn't do anything new, but the modulation at around 2:20 is well set-up. Overall a well produced cue in the genre described.

Funny How Things Work Out by Film & TV ComposerIan Dolamore

I liked the textures and eastern influenced scale mode and use of augmented 4th. Interesting blend of sounds and textures. I like the quirkiness. Accomplished use of samples, though I felt that the strings were a little bit over quantized in the slow middle section from around 2:20.

Feature Comment

"Old boys networks do exist. Middlemen take unhealthy commissions out of work pitched for. Demo fees go unpaid and the quality of music drops because the technology is more affordable and hence available......"
