Nothing gets the heart pounding harder than a powerful choral film score. This month Alex and James review five of their favourite choral scores written by Screened Music composers.

“The first thing one notices is the use of real singers, which obviously gives it a sense of quality and power. It provokes a rich imagery which we're sure worked wonderfully at the douenement of this film. The musical material is stark and dark. You've employed a largely homophonic style which works well but you've also included, especially at the start of the cue, vocal articulations which add real interest.”

“Powerful vocal lines. Really like how you can pick out their words. Even though we're guessing they are samples, we're pretty sure an audience wouldn't know. Really enjoying the textures employed, the dissonances in the choir and the syncopated entries, which all combine to make one hell of an eerie atmosphere.”

“The vocal elements are used very effectively as orchestral colour and combine well with the other instruments. It's a stirring track, very Hollywood! We'd love to see this with the film.”

“We love the wash of sound and the very relaxing, ethereal textures. You've mixed the vocal elements seamlessly with the pads. It all sounds very convincing. Great work!”

“We like how you've used the real choir with the full-on Brazilian percussion. It must've been stunning in performance! The exoticism of the track is provided on no small part by the vocal techniques used, the shouts, the mixtures of theme and punchy homophonic accompaniment.”
