Screened Music News - "Quirky, weird and wacky": March's Team Picks

This month's team picks are a selection of weird and wonderful tracks written by some of Screened Music's finest.

Picks

Hungarian Whiplash by Peter Godfrey

Picked by Rob Manning

“This is a real foot tapper which sounds amazing. It has a dramatic 'quirkyness' with an eastern European feel which makes me think of people frantically dancing at some sort of celebration. It has a very impressive full orchestral sound (I'd love to know how many live instruments were involved). I'm not quite sure that the style perfectly matches the production title 'American Gladiators' but it comes as no surprise that with quality music like this you got the job.”

Unhappy And You Know It by Mat Davidson

Picked by Rob Manning

“This is a quirky take on a well known melody. From the start the accordion and xylophone sets up a playful kooky feel which works well with the upright bass, adding nice depth and a slightly 'dubby' feel. The production is strong and well mixed and although it is a short piece Mat finds time to take us somewhere different before rounding it up with a compact tidy ending.”

To The Pub by Andrew Kremer

Picked by Alex Baranowski

“A lovely piece of instrumentation – Ben Hooper’s creaking violin performance really works, giving the piece a lovely “gypsy” quality that you can’t help but smile at once you’ve seen the film. I watched “Project Huxley” online and the music had just the amount of tongue-in-cheek that was needed! A really well performed and arranged piece.”

The Ministry by Simon Watkin

Picked by Alex Baranowski

“A great, quirky piece. I love how the ethereal choir at the beginning gets swallowed up Monty Python style into the playful second section. The movement between the instruments and styles is infectious, I especially like the voices that counteract the big choir at the beginning. I'm sure this complimented the accompanying images brilliantly.”

Gaza Strip Shuffle by Robert Jarvis

Picked by Alex Baranowski

“What a great riff! Infectiously fun and wonderful use of instrumentation. The mix of Jazz elements with the obvious Israeli-Palestinian undertones sounds like the two music cultures were just meant to be together. Having live instruments to bring out your compositional nuances must have been a real treat, and it's so well arranged that the piece fits together perfectly. Well done indeed, I'm off to brush up on my Palestinian music!”
